Ever since I was an officer in the chapter I've wanted to attend AOII convention. So when AMy Hart Mills called and asked me to take her place, it was a no-brainer. And to no surprise, AOII Convention did not disappoint. THis year it was held in the hot but beautiful desert of Tucson, Arizona. It was a once in a lifetime experience (which I plan to experience several times). Knoxville Area Alumnae Chapter was proudly presented with the Ruby award. More notably, our very own Kandyce Harber was elected to the prestigious AOII Executive Board. Overall it was an unforgettable 4 days filled with sisterhood, Ritual, new friends, great food and lots of fun. I would recommend to anyone how has the chance to attend AOII Convention. Just as the AOII tagline promises, it exceeded my expectations.

May 1st was an exciting day....It was groundbreaking day for the Morgan Hill Sorority Village....What an exciting time for the Knoxville Alumnae Chapter and the Omicron chapter on Tennessee's campus! 2010 Leadership Institute

This year, five ladies from Omicron, both collegiate and alumnae, joined other sisters from all over to "Walk the Talk" together for Leadership Institute in Franklin, TN. This was a three day event which focused on leadership, ritual and friendship. With some dynamic motivational speakers and hands on courses, we learned a lot about leadership training, sisterhood and fun to carry throughout life!

This year, Omicron received the Pearl Award, as well as the Academic Honor Roll Chapter Total Honor Roll!! These ladies worked very hard to achieve the Standards of Excellence, and we are so proud of them!

And then there is even more! Micah Johnson was one of six college women who received the AOII Collegiate Woman of Leadership Award, and Kandyce Harber was one of five alumnae women who received the AOII Alumnae Woman of Leadership Award. These awards are only given every TWO years! Congratulations to Micah and Kandyce, who are tremendously deserving of this recognition for their service to the chapter and community! It's so incredible that Omicron ladies received one in each of those categories. No other chapter did that! So, so very exciting!We are so proud of our Omicrons!

Nashville Flooding -Ruby Fund Relief

Dear Sisters,

On May 1 and 2, the city of Nashville experienced over 13 inches of rain within 3 hours with floodwaters inundating roads, highways and homes. The Cumberland River and its tributaries quickly flooded leaving thousands of residents in middle Tennessee with severe damage to their homes and possessions.

The AOII Foundation has begun to receive Ruby Fund requests from area AOII sisters. Several other requests are expected in the upcoming days and weeks, as damage to the city of Nashville is projected to exceed $1.5 billion.

Exciting News~AOII's get published!

I wanted to share some exciting news! Cara (Johnson) Cardell and Brooke (Bowlin) Thurman have been working to write a children's book for the last couple of years. They are in the last stages of publishing and the book is at the printers now! They have always been interested in starting a little business and this was something the girls could do "on the side" but still have fun with it, too.

The book is an officially licensed Greek product and the first of its kind - this first one is about Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. Brooke and Cara hope to eventually expand the book series to serve all of the women's Greek organizations. They have been working with the AOII corporate office in Brentwood and their licensing company in New York. The girls are really excited about the book and the positive message it conveys. AOII has meant a lot to both alumni personally because it is where they developed their friendship in college.

They just launched a new website www.BananaPunchBooks.com so please check it out and let Brooke and Cara know what you think! They will primarily be taking web orders through this site along with a few other retail outlets. The books will be in stock in approximately 6 weeks so right now they are offering a reduced price for anyone who pre-orders their copy. Please pass on our website to any other Greek friends who may be interested in hearing about our book.

Senior Send-Off at UT's Pratt Pavillion

On Sunday, April 25, the Knoxville Area Alumnae Chapter welcomed 36 seniors into alumnae status at the annual "Senior Send-Off."

Thanks to sisters like Ellie Wilson Whitesell, the event was held at UT's Pratt Pavillion. Guests dined on delicious boxed lunches from Pimento's, heard the latest update on Omicron's House Campaign and shared their post-graduation plans.

All the seniors were reminded of AOII's generous "First Year's On Us" program which pays for your first year's dues in an alumnae chapter.

Thanks to everyone who attended and worked so hard to make the afternoon so special!

Omicron Chapter Honored at 2010 Greek Awards

On Sunday, April 11, members of Omicron Chapter attended the 2010 Greek Awards Banquet and AOII came away with some great honors!

Micah Johnson won Chapter President of the year for Panhellenic, Anne Buckle won the Garcia-Cozart Scholarship and Omicron won top honors in Greek Excellence!

Omicron was one of only four other sororities to win the Volunteer awards in Greek Excellence.

Update on AOII House

The time has finally come for ground to be broken at Morgan Hill for the AOII house and other sorority houses at UT. We are very excited and know our alums are, too, but we’re also “down to the wire” in getting all of our fund-raising in place to receive the green-light from UT to proceed with our building project. Without UT’s go-ahead, AOII can’t move the first shovel of dirt.

Here is the situation: UT requires a certain amount of cash raised up-front before each of the sorority groups can begin construction. While Omicron Chapter’s building fund has raised more than $800,000 to date with a lot of hard work and countless volunteer hours, AOII is missing the mark on our goal to begin construction by about $210,000, as of April 2010.

What this current shortfall means for AOII is that – right now – there will be other sororities that may very well be able to get their houses started before we do, which means they’ll be “open for business” for Rush / Recruitment in fall 2011. And we won’t. What this will mean for our recruitment numbers and competitiveness within Panhellenic is not completely clear. But, we can only imagine that it will not be to AOII’s advantage that in less than 18 months other groups will be able to host their memberships and new member prospects in brand-new, beautifully built houses – while AOII is still stuck in the old, antiquated, over-crowded, structurally unsound Panhellenic Building.

AOII has always had a UT tradition of leading the way for others, not trailing behind. This house is a key part of AOII being competitive and remaining a top organization for excellence among university women at UT for generations to come. Without this house, AOII will not be competitive – it’s that simple. And when sororities cease to be competitive, they can also – over time – cease to be. With all the years we’ve shared in AOII and with the knowledge of Omicron Chapter as such a point of pride on the UT campus, this scenario is not one we want, nor is it one we can risk.

We have made many calls, visits and personal requests for support among our chapter’s alumnae, and we’ve been honored and tremendously appreciative of our alums who’ve answered that call. However, many alumnae have not yet answered it. There may be all kinds of reasons why – very legitimate reasons, too. The tough economy, kids or grandkids in school, demands of other charitable giving requests . . . we know that there are many reasons this house campaign may not have been an immediate priority in the past. But now – at this point -- we need 2010 to be the year that the house becomes a priority for us all. 10. Do something for yourself - Alumnae chapter involvement may be just what you have been looking for - a group of friends where you can be yourself. You decide how active you want to be.

The Knoxville Area Alumnae Chapter hosted the annual Founder's Day Celebration on Sunday, January 24, at Cherokee Country Club. Sisters enjoyed an assortment of sandwiches, desserts and delicious chocolate covered strawberries.

Jennifer Holder delivered the keynote message ans was later honored with the Outstanding Citizenship Award. Members of the 2010 Leader's Council discussed Omicron's many achievements from the past year and introduced its' newest members.

Our founders were honored with a candlelighting ceremony and a basket was passed around to collect donations for the AOII Foundation's Ruby Fund. Awards were handed out to Whitney Glenn Cozart recipients, as well as Kandyce Harber who was honored as the 2009-2010 Outstanding Alumna.

2009-2010 Outstanding Citizenship Award -- Jennifer Holder

Jennifer proudly serves her alma mater as a past member of the Board of Governors of the UT Alumni Association and currently serves as immediate past chair of the UT Alumni Association’s Women’s Council, as a Knoxville campus Chancellor’s Associate, and as a UT Alumni Association Knoxville board member. She also serves as board member and secretary of the Central Business Improvement District of Knoxville, as a member of the City of Knoxville Public Assembly Facilities Board, and on the nonprofit boards of 91.9, Inc. (Friends of WUOT), Beck Cultural Exchange Center, and the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial Association.

But her service to our community doesn’t stop there. She’s also involved in or a member of the Knoxville Museum of Art, Junior League of Knoxville, Nucleus Knoxville and holds various memberships supporting local non-profits, including Knox Heritage, YWCA, YMCA and the Knoxville Area Urban League.

Her past citizenship involvement is just as profound, and includes: Character Counts, Blount Mansion, Friends of Literacy, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Arthritis Foundation, Knoxville Health Improvement Council, Knoxville Opera Board, March of Dimes, Leadership Knoxville, United Way of Greater Knoxville, University of Tennessee Alumni Association, Volunteers of America, Project Grad, and Maryville College Annual Giving Campaign--not to mention her service to AOII, which includes: BBQ chair, Alumnae Chapter President, and Financial Advisor for AAC. WHEW!

2009-2010 Outstanding Alumna Award -- Kandyce Harber (not pictured because she was unable to attend due to recent surgery)

Kandyce is well-beyond deserving of this prestigious award. Some of the most memorable examples of her service are to the collegiate chapter. She always was (and still is) a primary connection to the alumnae chapter for the collegiates. She attends several chapter meetings, social events, philanthropy events and LC meetings throughout the year. Not to mention all of her extra trips to campus for one reason or another. She has gone above and beyond her duties as one of the advisers on the Alumnae Advisory Committee. With 150 plus girls in the chapter, you can imagine how many unexpected situations arise, but she has helped discover and implement countless solutions, financially and emotionally. She is known by collegiate members as understanding and patient but a definite go-getter.

Her importance to the alumnae chapter is just as obvious. Whenever a question is presented, she always has an answer. She is the first that many call for help and advice. She has written personal thank you notes to all alumnae who have contributed to the building campaign since it started. She has represented Omicron and Knoxville Alumnae in a positive way on the Scholarship Committee of the AOII Foundation for three years. She has served as treasurer of the Knoxville Alumnae, which entails handling the finances for barbecue, Founders Day, scholarship fund, and all alum events just to name a few. Sometimes all the behind the scenes work she does is taken for granted because she’s been doing them for so well for so long!

We are truly lucky to have her as a member of the Knoxville Area Alumnae Chapter. Her service is exemplary to which all alumnae should strive to achieve. And that is why she is worthy of the title of 2009-2010 Outstanding Alumna.

The Knoville Alumnae Chapter has certainly been as busy as ever! We helped Omicron with Recruitment and Bid Day, helped coordinate another successful BBQ, hosted a Mexican Fiesta for the New Members at the beautiful home of Sheree Johnson, participated in the Komen Race for the Cure, walked with Omicron at the annual Light the Night walk, ran in the Buddy’s Race Against Cancer, brought Halloween candy and cookie cakes to Omicron’s chapter meetings, and participated in the Jingle Bell Run. And jus last month, the alums spiced up its annual holiday party by decorating chocolate houses (instead of gingerbread houses) thanks to some creative thinking by Ann Reego, who also hosted the party (see photos below).

The 50th annual international AOII convention in Tampa, FL last summer also proved to be a success, not only for Omicron Chapter, but for our Knoxville Area Alumnae Chapter as well. The alumnae chapter was given the Standards of Excellence Ruby Award for Distinguished Alumnae Chapters and a Membership Retention Citation. Two Omicrons alums were honored with individual awards as well.

Mary Jane Sharp was awarded the Helen St. Clair Mullan Award. This award honors one alumna member who has continually served AOII over the years, while displaying a loyal, faithful and devoted commitment to the Fraternity. The award remains the Fraternity’s most prominent and highly-recognized award for individual alumnae. And Mary Jane’s own daughter, Malinda Sharp, was honored with the Rose Award.

Alpha Omicron Pi Announces Fraternity Leaders at International Convention

With a new biennium underway, the sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi are proud to announce the 2009-2011 Executive Board. The newly-elected leaders were selected during the events surrounding AOII’s 50th International Convention in Tampa, Florida held June 24th through June 28, 2009.

Alpha Omicron Pi was founded in 1897 at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City. AOII has over 141,000 initiated members in 187 collegiate chapters and over 140 alumnae chapters across the United States and Canada. Alpha Omicron Pi is an international women’s fraternity promoting friendship for a lifetime, inspiring academic excellence and lifelong learning, and developing leadership skills through service to the Fraternity and community.

The annual AOII Alumnae & Senior dinner was really great! It was definitely hot, but lots of fun. After a delicious homemade southern style dinner from Take Out Thyme, the seniors gathered on Tyra's deck for a group photo. Thanks to everyone who helped make the special time together possible!

Ruby Fund assists sisters in dire need

The Ruby Fund, also known as the "heart" of AOII, is available for sisters who are in dire need. Since 1946, the fund has assisted over 300 AOII sisters.

All requests and awards remain confidential and are handled by the Foundation's Ruby Fund Committee. Assistance in the form of a grant is given to designated recipients.

Long-time AOII Executive Director to Retire

After 18 years of serving as the Executive Director of Alpha Omicron Pi, Melanie Lampertz will soon retire. The long-time leader will complete her professional tenure with the organization June 30, 2009—the end of AOII’s biennium.

Lampertz began volunteering with the organization thirty years ago. She served in several roles on the Executive Board before coming on staff for AOII twenty-two years ago. During this time, Lampertz has seen the organization through significant growth, the building of a new Fraternity headquarters, the creation of AOII Properties, Inc, two structure changes, the planning of all International Conventions, Leadership Institutes, and Leadership Academies, and the implementation of an overall strategic plan. Lampertz has also effectively managed and developed a team of staff to support Fraternity goals.

“I will remain wholeheartedly committed to this organization, its standards of excellence, its legacy, and the women who define our purpose,” said Lampertz. “In addition, it gives me great pleasure to leave my professional tenure with the organization healthy and thriving. This milestone in my life comes with much thought, but also much excitement as I anticipate enjoying retirement with my family and grandchildren.”

Lampertz has also served as a champion for all Greeks through her dedication and commitment to the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), the Fraternity Executives Association (FEA), the Executive Directors Association (EDA), and the Fraternal Information and Programming Group (FIPG). Through her roles as the President of the EDA and FIPG, the FEA Awards Chair, FEA Program Chair, and a Director for the FEA Executive Board, Lampertz has remained committed to the development of the entire Greek community.

“Over the years, Alpha Omicron Pi has enjoyed so many accomplishments, and we are very grateful of the dedication and hard work that Melanie brought to the organization to advance our mission,” said Susan Danko, International President of Alpha Omicron Pi. “We will miss her, and wish her much happiness as she begins a new phase of her life.”

Founder's Day 2009 - Afternoon Tea & Dessert

What a lovely Founder's Day! On January 25, AOII alums and collegiates gathered at Cherokee Country Club for an Afternoon Tea & Dessert. In fact, so many alums attended that we had to bring in extra chairs!

The 45-minute program began with opening remarks from Alumnae Chapter President Tyra Tucker Haag (Omicron '00). Sara Pottinger Burke (Omicron '99) was the featured speaker and drove all the way Louisville, KY to deliver an inspirational speech. Omicron Song Leader Anne Buckle led a beautiful rendition of AOII Grace. Everyone was treated to an assortment of delicious food, including chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, brownies, sandwiches and tea.

Alumnae Chapter Vice-President Katy Wilson Bibee (Omicron '99) asked attendees to donate to the AOII Ruby Fund--the heart of AOII. It is with pleasure that $380 will be sent to Headquarters to help sisters in great need. Erin Hutchinson (Omicron '01), Alumnae Chapter Awards Chair, recognized Omicron's 50-year members and gave plaques to this year's Outstanding Alumna and Outstanding Citizen Award recipients. Ellie Wilson Whitesell and Betty Chastain Emery were honored as the 2008-2009 Outstanding Alums. Peggy Howard was awarded the 2008-2009 Outstanding Citizen Award. Vice President of Academic Development Stephanie Selecman announced the 2009 Cozart Scholarship winners. New Member Educator Alissa Ralph introduced the 2008 Omicron pledge class, followed by a re-cap of Recruitment by Wendy Crenshaw, Vice-President of Membership Recruitment. Omicron Chapter President Micah Johnson delivered the State of the Chapter address and Lauren Zaller (Omicron '03) gave an exciting update about progress on the AOII Capital Campaign.

What a special afternoon shared by sisters near and far. We missed those of you who could not be with us and look forward to seeing you next year!

Sara Pottinger Burke (Omicron '99) featured speaker at Founder's Day 2009

At just 17 years old, Sara came to UT in the Fall of '99 from Louisville, KY. She quickly became someone all the girls looked up to in the chapter and on campus. Her major leadership roles included Chapter Relations Chair and ultimately Chapter President. She graduated from UT with honors, married her high school sweetheart Chris Burke, finished law school and on Oct. 5, 2007 welcomed her first child into the world--Sidney (a future AOII!) Sara is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Sara is an exceptional example of what it means to live "AOII for a lifetime.” She continually supports AOII, is a true woman of character and lets her light shine everywhere she goes.

Betty Chastain Emery named 2008-2009 AOII Outstanding Alumna

Betty Chastain Emery is someone who truly exemplifies AOII for a lifetime. Her nominator wrote that she is always ready to help with just about anything anyone asks her to do. She has been pro-AOII forever and keeps in touch with her AOII sisters far and near. She has a true philanthropic spirit, too and volunteers at East Tennessee Children's Hospital nearly every day. During Recruitment time each year, she sends in Recs and has assisted the Building Committee by calling alums, writing letters and going on visits to request financial support to help make a "House for Omicron" a reality. She also visits older alums to lift their spirits or even take them a meal. What a role model and caring sister we have in Betty Chastain Emery!

Ellie Wilson Whitesell named 2008-2009 AOII Outstanding Alumna

The Outstanding Alumna award is to honor a member of the local Knoxville Alumnae Chapter...someone who has gone above and beyond for AOII locally. This year, we have two recipients. Ellie Wilson Whitesell has been involved in the Alumnae Chapter for several years, but for the past three years has been dedicated to a specific endeavor--our annual Bar-B-Q. With her knack for always knowing how to get things done, it's no wonder why our BBQ has been so successful over the years because of her leadership. She's also been gracious with her time, helping to chaperone date parties and formals. So thank you, Ellie Wilson Whitesell for always putting a smile on our faces, but more importantly, for everything you do for our chapter!

Peggy Howard named 2008-2009 Outstanding Citizen by Knoxville Area Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi

Peggy Howard is certainly nothing short of outstanding. She was the "voice" of AOII in the Forties and you could say she was born with a song in her heart. She sang at all our events, especially rush parties, and has been keeping Knoxville singing ever since. Her name is one associated with choral music in this area. She has spent most of her 80 years studying, teaching and sharing her music, and for the past 18 years has been the choir director at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church.

She has been active in the Knoxville arts community her entire life. She has truly moved music forward and impacted thousands with her beautiful spirit. She has directed several choirs in Knoxville, for church, her community, the Junior League, and just too many to mention each one by name. She’s gladly volunteered in many musical programs and community musical activities as well. Her nominator wrote, “She did not hide her talent under a bushel, but shared it with us all.” And as if she wasn’t busy enough, she served as Alumnae Chapter President 1951 to 1952.

For several years now, she has been battling cancer…yet she never complains. If you ask her how she's doing, she says, “I'm doing fine, just fine.” Anyone who knows her, especially the hundreds of voice students she has taught over the years, as well as friends and family, see how deeply she embraces life, and how much a part of her energy and enthusiasm for it comes from and through music. Her daughter proudly exclaims, "My mom spends every day, no matter what, celebrating life. She's always happy and looking forward. She wants to live as fully as she can every day life gives her.” It is with great love that we honor Peggy Howard as the 2008-2009 Outstanding Citizen.

Wren Smith Anderson (Omicron '99) writes children's book in honor of late mother-in-law's battle with breast cancer

Wren Smith Anderson (Omicron '99) wrote and illlustrated the book, Sweet Dreams, Anita Bonita, in honor of her late mother-in-law, Anita Anderson, who passed away from breast cancer last July. The book is based on a true story that she wrote about on her cancer blog with CaringBridge while she was undergoing her chemotherapy treatments. This short, sweet little story exemplifies how much Anita loved life and how she could put a smile on anyone’s face. It was an inspiration to those who laughed and cried with her. Eighty percent of proceeds will go to the Anita Conchin Anderson Foundation in care of Tennessee Bank & Trust. This foundation has been established in her honor and memory to further the various interests Anita had for children, education, and breast cancer awareness. Chi Psi Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi voted "Best Dressed Sorority" by Seventeen Magazine

The Chi Psi chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi has been voted Seventeen Magazine’s Best Dressed Sorority! This title was awarded after a nation-wide search for the magazine to name the most fashionable chapter of a sorority.

The sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo are setting the trends all over campus. Not only do they share their pride in AOII, but the girls share wardrobes as well, whether it is the perfect outfit for a first date, a job interview or simply for class.

As the winner of the contest, the 140 ladies of the Chi Psi chapter will be outfitted head-to-toe in the Victoria’s Secret PINK collegiate line for Cal Poly. More importantly, the chapter will receive a donation of $1700 towards the organization’s key philanthropy and will be highlighted in an upcoming issue of Seventeen magazine.

AOII Alumna Jamie Woodson appointed Speaker Pro Tempore for the Senate

State Senator Jamie Woodson (R-Knoxville) has been appointed Speaker Pro Tempore for the Senate, a key leadership role in the Tennessee General Assembly. The announcement was made by Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey as the 106th General Assembly concluded their organizational session in Nashville Thursday.

"I am honored to be appointed to this position in our State Senate," said Senator Woodson. "This is a challenging year for our General Assembly, and I look forward to working with Lt. Governor Ramsey and our leadership team to move through the tough issues we face. I also look forward to continuing my commitment to improving educational policy for the citizens of our great state."
The Speaker Pro Tem presides over the Senate at the direction of the Lt. Governor. It also is a key leadership role in the General Assembly, in both public policy and day-to-day operations of the State Senate.

Woodson previously served as Chairman of the Education Committee, where she will continue to serve as a member. She was also appointed to the powerful Finance, Ways and Means Committee.

"Senator Woodson is extremely qualified to take on this leadership role," said Lt. Governor Ramsey. "She has a proven track record as Education Chairman of providing strong leadership on many difficult issues. I look forward to working with her in this new role as Speaker Pro Tem."

Now that the organization is completed, the General Assembly has adjourned until Feb. 9 in order to make office assignments and await budget details.

Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act

As you have likely heard, the development of an economic stimulus package in the opening days of this year's Congressional session will include approximately $300 billion in tax cuts. The details of what will be included in the stimulus remain up in the air.

What exactly does this mean for AOII?
Alpha Omicron Pi is working along with other Greek organizations to reach out to our members of Congress in an effort to attach the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA) to the stimulus package. Key decisions will be made in the next few weeks, so immediate action is needed for our best chance of success.

Our sisters have put forth a great effort over the past several years in trying to secure passage of this important piece of legislation. Thanks to your calls and letters, we have been able to obtain an impressive list of Congressional co-sponsors for CHIA.

The House of Representatives could vote on its version of the bill as soon as the end of this week, though we believe it is more likely they will delay their vote until shortly after Barack Obama's January 20th Inauguration.

How you can help!
Please contact your Senators and Congressmen as soon as possible (ideally this week) in support of CHIA being added to the stimulus package. We need our members, as constituents, to tell their elected representatives that adding CHIA to the economic stimulus package is important to them.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Rates Rise in Women

A recent study done by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., finds that the rates of rheumatoid arthritis in women have risen drastically from 1995 to 2004. Research shows that the disease has increased by nearly 50 percent in women, but the rate for men has remained the same.

Dr. Hilal Maradit Kremers, the author of the study, says that the most likely factor in causing the rise is the environment. She goes on to say, "the increase could be anything from dietary to hormonal changes to chemical exposures."

According to Arthritis Today, from 1995 to 2004 rates of RA has increased by nearly half to 54 per 100,000 women. Men's rates has only went from 28.6 to 29.5 per 100,000 men.

Dr. Kremers believes that preventing the disease should be the focus for the future. With side effects such as heart disease and diabetes; rheumatoid arthritis is sometimes difficult to treat.

Omicron House Renderings Unveiled

A Walk Through the Omicron Chapter House

The exterior of the house is a departure from the traditional Greek columns for a timeless, elegant and "home away from home" feel. The large windows on the right of the house will illuminate our staircase beautifully. As you enter the house, the grand staircase will be to your right and a sitting area to your left as you look down a wide hallway. The hallway takes you down a row of integrated display cases in the wall for JWH cups and historic chapter memorabilia, a real show of Omicron heritage and history of friendship.

To the left of the stairs is the formal parlor, a space that can be used for alumnae baby and wedding showers and mother’s teas. Off of the parlor is a great outdoor living space. To the left of the hallway is our new – finally large enough for meetings – chapter room. The room has the ability to be opened into the dining area and parlor/grand hallway, allowing for flow within the house for major events.

We will now be able to have Founder’s Day and Parents Weekend in our own facility (minimizing costs for those events). The chapter room reveals the "Emily Mahan Foust Stage" for recruitment skits, and use during chapter meetings, an extremely functional element! When you go upstairs you will find space for 48 women to call home. The upstairs is filled with double and quad rooms and also provides residents a small kitchen and living room. The quad rooms have great closet space and a dressing area for members.

We hope that you are as excited as we are with the design that has culminated after three years of work with architect Cockrill Design and Planning. The Architecture and Building Subcommittee wishes you a safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to passing the torch to the Interior Design Subcommittee in our next phases of design development.

Several of our alums go through different circumstances in their lives when an AOII sister is just what the doctor ordered. The alumnae chapter is currently in the process of forming an AOII CARE TEAM. Sisters that choose to serve on this team would "let their light shine" in several capacities---visiting a sister in the hospital, writing a letter of encouragement, delivering a meal or simply picking up the phone to say "hello."

A sister honors the memory of her son with the Forrest Spence Fund

Brittany Miller Spence (Omicron '98) and her husband David have created the Forrest Spence Fund in memory of their son Forrest, who passed away on November 4, 2007.

Goals of the Forrest Spence Fund

The Fund supplies a convenience basket for families with babies in the PICU who are facing an extended stay. Comfort items in the baskets include the following: a handmade blanket, roll of quarters for vending machines, magazines, lotion, hand sanitizer, stuffed animal, children's books, journal, the book "Praying the Scriptures for Your Child," chapstick, baby socks, baby hat, notecards, card to decorate for the baby's bed, snacks and water.

The Fund also provides for stocking the PICU wish list with items such as: Crib mobiles, CD players, CDs, Books, Blankets, Socks, Hats, Teethers, Crib mirrors, Sound machines, Night lights, Bubbles, Stuffed animals, Goodies, and treats for the PICU staff.

Last year, more than 1600 children and their families were cared for in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center. With each child, there came a story. It is these stories - stories of courage, love, fear, uncertainty, healing, joy and sadness - that explain the impact that Le Bonheur and its staff can have on a child, a family, even a community and a kingdom.

Light the Night is on Oct. 2nd this year at Volunteer Landing. I have created a team called "AOTT Alums and Friends." This year marks the 48th Annual AOII Barbecue to be held in Circle Park on Sat., October 25, 2008 two hours before the Alabama game. Circle Park is located between the Torchbearer and the Communications Building off of Volunteer Boulevard. The game time is currently undetermined due to television coverage and may not be set until 10 days prior to kickoff.

Proceeds from our barbecue benefit Arthritis Research both locally and nationally as well as funding two Harriet C. Greve Scholarships. Your support is vital for our continued success in hosting just one major fundraiser per year.

The Barbecue is a wonderful opportunity to get together and socialize with friends. See you there! GO VOLS! BEAT BAMA!
